Pre-feasibility and Feasibility Studies for Phuket Water Resources Development Project

Narrative Description

The  project  was  conducted  to  alleviate the problem  of  water  shortage  in  Phuket  Province.  The study  was conducted in 2 phases, i.e. phase 1:  The study of potential water resources and phase 2:  The feasibility study of the potential water resources.  The feasible water resources development schemes without any physical, engineering, social, legal and environmental constraints, attained from the study are:
•The Bang Wat Reservoir Fill-up:  The scheme comprises the 5.0 m. raise of the present reservoir storage level and the water diversion of Bang Yai Canal during rainy season from June to November to Bang Wat reservoir.  The total diverted water volume is 6.40  mcm /yr. which will increase the reservoir potential of water distribution from the existing 4.0 mcm /yr. to 10.7 mcm /yr.  The total construction cost is 372.56 mb.
•The Bang Thao Groundwater Basin Development:  The scheme will be developed by constructing an underground cut-off wall to store groundwater and other facilities including pumping wells, regulating pond, salinity control well and drainage system.  The total construction cost is 1,572.3 mb.

Services Description

The services provided by SEATEC are to conduct the initial environmental examination (IEE), during the phase I study, for the potential water resources including surface reservoirs, groundwater basins, mining pits and natural swamps and the environmental impact assessment, during the phase 2 study, of the feasible water resources development schemes, i.e. the Bang Wat Reservoir Fill-up scheme and the Bang Thao Groundwater Basin Development scheme.  The study illustrates relatively low environmental impacts, especially the Bang Wat Reservoir Fill-up scheme.  For the Bang Thao Groundwater Basin Development scheme, the expected impacts are the land acquisition about 43 rai and the decrease or dry-off of the people wells in the vicinity areas of the project pumping stations.  However, environmental mitigation measures as well as environmental mitigation plans are formulated for both schemes.
